Physical Education

The Christian faith is at the heart of our school community.

At Christ Church we all care, learn and work together for God and others.

‘For we are all God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do’. Ephesians 2:10

Our Christian Values are

Creation, Community, Wisdom, Endurance, Thankfulness, Reconciliation

Intent

PE at Christ Church Primary School aims to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel individual’s abilities in competitive sports and other physically-demanding activities.

We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

PE at Christ Church is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy life styles, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere with activities that may be once have felt too difficult.

We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Christ Church, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation

Pupils participate in weekly high quality PE and sporting activities at Christ Church Primary School. PE provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance and swimming.

Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunchtime sports clubs are available each day and children can attend after-school sport clubs three evenings per week.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

We also provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being for all pupils.

Each year a small group of Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunchtime clubs, our annual Sports Day and any other sporting activities.

Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example cricket, outdoor and adventure, boxing and skipping, again providing the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and to try something new.

Children in Year 5 swim once a week for 10 weeks during the Autumn Term.  We repeat the 10 week course later in school for children in Year 4 (Spring Term) and Year 3 (Summer Term).

Children also participate in the ‘Daily Mile’, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. At Christ Church School, we use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers planning. Each part of the PE curriculum is reviewed on a termly basis by the subject leader.
